Lautaro Martinez Warned To Control Anger After Seeing Red Against Cagliari
Inter Milan’s assistant coach Cristian Stellini has warned Lautaro Martinez to tone down his anger after the Argentine striker was sent off for dissent against Cagliari on Sunday.
Martinez gave the Nerazzurri a first half lead but Radja Nainggolan’s deflected second half strike denied his parent club all three points and earned the visitors a share of the spoils.
Referee Gianluca Manganiello sent Martinez off in the final minute of second half stoppage time after the 22-year-old reacted angrily to a decision that went against him.
Martinez will now sit out Inter Milan’s Coppa Italia quarterfinal game against Fiorentina at the San Siro on Wednesday.
Martinez could also miss upcoming Serie A games against Udinese and AC Milan if the traditional three-game ban for a straight red card is upheld.
Inter manager Antonio Conte refused to honour his post-match duties, leaving Stellini to take charge, and he had some words of advice for Martinez.
"It was excessive. He has to be careful," Stellini said at the post-match news conference.
"It is important to us that he is available for games.
"He has to learn from what happened so it doesn't happen again."
Martinez’s absence could give Manchester United loanee Alexis Sanchez, who was introduced for the final ten minutes on Sunday, an opportunity to enjoy more minutes.
"We are expecting to lose Lautaro, so it could be an opportunity for Sanchez. There are lots of games to play," Stellini added.
