Ian Maatsen Loaned To Dortmund After Signing New Chelsea Contract
Chelsea have allowed defender Ian Maatsen to join Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season after he signed a new contract at Stamford Bridge.
Maatsen, who joined from PSV Eindhoven in 2018, has signed a new deal to the summer of 2026.
The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Burnley in the Championship and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League but rejected a permanent transfer to Vincent Kompany's side last summer.
Following his return to his parent club, Maatsen only made three starts in 15 appearances for Chelsea in the first half of the season.
The Dutchman has now joined Dortmund on loan for the rest of the 2023/2024 campaign.
"Borussia Dortmund made a lot of effort to sign me," Maatsen said in a club statement.
"I've been following BVB and their fans for a long time and even went to the Champions League match in Manchester in the autumn of 2022 to see the team live on the pitch.
"I'm very happy that the loan has now worked out. I promise that I'll give my all to help the team be successful and am really looking forward to the Yellow Wall."
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl added: "Due to our current personnel situation, we have decided to further strengthen in the left-back position this winter.
"With his strengths, Ian fits our requirements. He's a player who brings a lot of pace, has a strong left foot and can also play in various positions. We're very pleased that we were able to complete this loan before our first Bundesliga match of the year."
Dortmund are currently fifth on the Bundesliga standings.
