Guardiola Denies City Interest In Fernandes Before Old Trafford Move
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City were never interested in pursuing a move for Bruno Fernandes before the Portuguese signed for Manchester United in the January transfer window.
Fernandes has transformed the atmosphere around Old Trafford since leaving Sporting Lisbon for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side for £47m.
The 25-year-old has scored three goals in seven appearances and has already been nominated for the Premier League’s player of the month for February.
Despite being linked with Fernandes last summer, Guardiola has insisted the English champions were not interested in recruiting the former Sampdoria man in the winter but has acknowledged the quality he comes with.
“I said many times it looks like we are linked with a thousand million players every month,” said the City manager ahead of the Manchester Derby at Old Trafford on Sunday.
“I don’t know if the agents want to create something to do that.
“But I think the club was not in talks with his agent about this player, but they link this guy and a thousand million more.”
Guardiola added: "I don't know what it means 'my type of player'. I like defenders too and good headers.
"I don't believe too much that these players are perfect for this team and manager. But I think he is an exceptional player and that is why Man United bought him."
Manchester United surprisingly defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium in December.
