Gerard Moreno Labels Chelsea As The Best Team In The World
Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno has labelled Chelsea as the best team in the world after the English side triumphed in Wednesday’s Super Cup final in Belfast.
Just as he did against Manchester United in the Europa League final, Moreno struck against the Blues, cancelling out Hakim Ziyech’s 27th minute opener in the second half.
With the score locked at 1-1 after extra-time, the game headed to penalties and substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga proved to be Chelsea hero as Thomas Tuchel’s men won 6-5 in the shootout.
Moreno, who scored Villarreal’s first penalty in the shootout and was named man-of-the-match, was full of praise for Chelsea after the game.
"[We’re] now competing with the best," the Spanish striker said post-game. "Chelsea were the favourites.
"I don’t know what the difference in budget is, but for me they’re the best team in the world."
Villareal manager Unai Emery refused to blame his charges for the defeat, insisting that they did their best.
"It’s a pride to represent this club, Villarreal and La Liga on a day like today," Emery said post-game.
"You cannot blame the players for anything because they’ve made a fantastic effort."
Villarreal will begin their 2021/2022 La Liga campaign against Granada on Monday.
The Yellow Submarines will be one of the seeded teams for the Champions League group stage draw later this month.
