Gavi Set For Long Layoff After Suffering Suspected ACL Injury

Gavi picked up the injury in the first half of Spain's 3-1 win over Georgia in their final EURO 2024 qualifier on Sunday and was replaced in the 26th minute.

The 19-year-old is suspected to have suffered an anterior cruciate ligament damage and is likely to miss a significant chunk if not the remainder of the 2023/2024 season.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Spain manager Luis De La Fuente said, "It is a very difficult and very hard moment, for Gavi and Barça, but also for the national team and for me. We are destroyed but football has these things, this is the ugly part and it is something uncontrollable. It seemed that we had lost.

"The blow was nothing. It was a bad gesture. It was due to control. He stepped wrong and his knee went. This can happen in any situation. It was an accident, a misfortune. He was perfect to play. He was fresh and phenomenal. He had just not played the weekend and had no problem. With another player, we would be regretting it just as much."

Gavi has appeared 15 times already for Barcelona this season and now has 27 caps for Spain.
