Phil Foden has expressed gratitude to England manager Gareth Southgate for giving him a second chance to impress for his country.

Foden courted controversy in September last year together with Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood when they breached coronavirus protocols by inviting girls to the team hotel during a UEFA Nations League fixture away at Iceland.

The pair were subsequently banished from camp but Foden has since earned recalls for recent games, and has earned a spot in Southgate’s squad for EURO 2020 on the back of an impressive season for Manchester City.

"I made a massive mistake," Foden told reporters from St George's Park.

"I was young. But Gareth said if I keep just doing well and keep performing I should get another opportunity.

"So I had to work hard for it and there are not many managers who would give you another opportunity, so I have to thank Gareth a lot for giving me another chance."

Foden helped Manchester City win the Premier League and Carabao Cup last season while defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final prevented a famous treble.

The 21-year-old was rewarded for his efforts by being voted the Professional Footballers Association and Premier League best young player of the year.

Foden has so far won six caps for the Three Lions, scoring two goals.
