Eric Dier Handed Four-Game Ban For Fan Confrontation
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier has been banned for four games and fined £40,000 for confronting an abusive fan during their FA Cup game against Norwich City back in March.
Dier climbed into the Tottenham Hotspur stadium stands at full time to remonstrate with the fan, who had got into an argument with the England international’s brother after Spurs were eliminated on penalties in the fifth round of the world’s oldest club competition.
Dier was restrained by stewards as things threatened to boil over and Spurs manager Jose Mourinho offered him his support afterwards, revealing that he would not condone any club sanctions against the 26-year-old.
The Football Association however issued Dier with a misconduct charge in April and have now confirmed his punishment.
Confirming his punishment, the FA on Wednesday morning released a statement that said: “Eric Dier has been suspended for four matches with immediate effect, fined £40,000 and warned as to his future conduct following a breach of FA Rule E3.
"The Tottenham Hotspur FC player admitted that his actions at the conclusion of a fixture against Norwich City FC in the FA Cup on March 4, 2020 were improper but denied that they were also threatening.
"An independent Regulatory Commission subsequently found Eric Dier's actions to be threatening."
Dier will miss all but one of Tottenham’s remaining Premier League games, including Sunday’s North London derby against Arsenal.
The former Sporting Lisbon defender has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham this season.
