Belgium To Pay 10th Minute Tribute To Eriksen In Game Against Denmark
Belgium intend to kick the ball out of play and hold a minute applause for Christian Eriksen in the tenth minute when they face Denmark in their second group game of EURO 2020 on Thursday.
Eriksen is recuperating in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest in Denmark’s EURO 2020 opener against Finland last Saturday.
The 29-year-old Inter Milan midfielder collapsed on the turf on the cusp of halftime and received lengthy treatment on the pitch by medics before being taken to hospital.
Romelu Lukaku dedicated his first goal of EURO 2020 against Russia to Eriksen, whom he plays with at Inter, while Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen were his teammates at Tottenham Hotspurs.
"This is about a celebration in football and for Christian," said Belgium boss Roberto Martinez to reporters.
"As you can imagine, the uncertainty that we had when the incident happened, that was a really tough moment, a tough moment for any player that was watching the game, a tough moment for players who have been sharing dressing rooms with Christian.
"Then from that point on, once you get the good news that Christian reacted positively, that he was talking, that he was in hospital, now it's almost a celebration."
The 10th minute has been chosen as a reference to Eriksen’s jersey number for Denmark.
