Antony Vows To Stick To Playing Style Despite Hullabaloo About Sheriff Trick
Manchester United forward Antony insists he will not change his style of play despite coming in for criticism for showboating against Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday.
United defeated their Moldovan counterparts 3-0 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Diogo Dalot, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.
But with the score locked at 0-0, Antony produced a trademark spin, with the ball stuck to his feet before knocking the ball out of play as his attempted pass failed to find a teammate.
Man United boss was caught on camera showing his displeasure while Old Trafford favourite Paul Scholes labelled Antony a 'clown' for the skill.
Speaking after the game, Ten Hag, who hooked Antony off at half time, told reporters: "I do not have a problem with that, as long as it is functional. So from him, like everyone else, I demand more. More runs behind, being more often in the (opposition’s) box. More pressing. More dribbles against opponents. More playing in the pockets. We demand more dominance.
“Then there is a trick like that which is nice, but as long as it is functional and you do not lose the ball. Then it is ok. But it is a trick and because of the trick, I will correct him.”
Antony has issued a defiant message on social media in response to the hullabaloo that has erupted from his extravagant piece of skill.
"We [Brazilian players] are known for our art and I will not stop doing what brought me to where I am!", Antony wrote on Instagram on Friday.
Antony has scored three goals in 11 appearances since signing from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer.
