Petkovic comes in as a replacement for Djamel Belmadi, who departed after Algeria failed to progress past the group stage at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

It was the second time in succession that Algeria have been eliminated at the group stage of an AFCON after winning the continental crown in 2019.

Petkovic was in charge of Switzerland between 2014 and 2021, qualifying them for the 2018 FIFA World Cup and two European Championships.

The 60-year-old's most recent job was as manager of French club Bordeaux.

Petkovic's first games in charge of Algeria will be against Bolivia and South Africa in international friendlies later this month.
