Van der Sar: De Ligt Will Move To England Or Spain

By Joshua Walters

Edwin van der Sar has shed light on Matthijs de Ligt's possible destination next summer as he links the Ajax captain with a move to either England or Spain.

The young centre-back has developed into a world-class prospect making him one of Europe’s most-sought after players in the transfer window, a feat heavily influenced by the player's strong showing in Ajax's fairytale run in the Champions League.

The Dutch side played one of the best brands of football in this season's Champions League and eliminated pre-tournament favourites Real Madrid and Juventus before being knocked out of the competition by Tottenham Hotspurs after a shocking 3-2 loss in the second leg game of the semi-final.

De Ligt has been linked with top European clubs including Barcelona, Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Juventus.

But the Ajax director believes a move to the Italian Seria A is not likely for the 19-year-old defender who fancies falling for a suitor in either the English Premier League or the Spanish LaLiga.

"I think he'll go to England or Spain."

"I think these will be De Ligt's final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high," Van der Sar told Sky Sport Italia.

"He's been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club."

De Ligt has been an integral part of Ajax’s Champions League run as he recorded the first goal of the night in the game that ended their campaign at the Yohan Cryuff Arena on Wednesday.

The Netherlands defender joined the Ajax first team in 2016, having gone through the youth ranks.

With their Champions League dream now over, the Eredivisie side are still in contention for the domestic trophy as they top the log with 80 points, same points with arch-rivals PSV Eindhoven with two games left to play.

In 17 Champions League games, De Ligt has scored three goals aside his three goals in thirty-one Eredivisie appearances.
