Sevilla Humiliate Real Madrid In 3-0 Win
By Harry Morgan
Real Madrid missed a glorious opportunity to extend their lead on the La Liga table on Wednesday as they were hammered 3-0 by Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium.
Barcelona had lost 2-1 at Leganes earlier on in the evening, but the European Champions’ aim of keeping the top spot on the La Liga table was thwarted as they were cut to size by the well-drilled hosts who proved superior in every department of the game.
The margin of the defeat means that the Los Blancos are tied up with Barcelona on 13 points, but trail the sworn rivals on the pegging order on inferior goal difference.
Wissam Ben Yedder attempted a lofted cross in the 9th minute as he jumped high and headed the ball to the right side of the goal. Thibaut Courtois was, however, alert and applied a reflex save to stop the ball from hitting the net.
Real Madrid were not second time lucky when Sevilla came knocking again in the 17th minute. Jesus Navas slipped a pass to Andre Silva, on the edge of the box, who found the right side of the net with a great effort.
The goal spurred on Pablo Machín’s men and Andre Silva extended the lead after just four minutes when he was presented with a simple task to roll the ball into an empty net from close range after a rebound had left Courtois stranded.
Wissam Ben Yedder completed the demolishing exercise in the 39th minute when fed on Franco Vazquez headed pass from over the defence to fire into the back of the net.
Gareth Bale shot wide three minutes into the injury time of the first time, and Referee Alejandro Hernandez denied Luka Modric's 56th-minute consolation goal was disallowed after the referee's consultion with the VAR.
Gareth Bale produced a ferocious strike towards the left post from the edge of the box in the 61st minute but saw his efforts go wide, twelve minutes before the Wales national team captain blew a huge opportunity after he shot wide from just outside of the box.
