Rashford Stars As Man United Win 1-0 At Leicester City
By Nigel Philips
Marcus Rashford's 9th Premier League goal of the season in his centenary appearance in the top flight was all Manchester United needed to beat Leicester City 1-0 at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.
The win moves the Red Devils to 5th place and above Arsenal, who play Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium later in the day.
Rashford should have given Manchester United the lead as early as the 5th minute after getting to the end of a precise cross from Luke Shaw, but he could only divert his effort over the crossbar from close range.
Rashford, making his 100th Premier League appearance for Manchester United, atoned for his earlier miss in the 9th minute when he collected Paul Pogba's exquisite clipped pass over the Leicester defence with a delightful first touch before giving Kasper Schmeichel no chance with a good finish from inside the area.
Rashford again tested Schmeichel from range on the stroke of halftime but the Leicester goalkeeper was equal to the task this time around.
After the break, Leicester upped the tempo and took the game to Manchester United, and they nearly got an equaliser with 61 minutes on the clock.
Maddison's free kick on the edge of the United penalty area looped into the air and Jamie Vardy came in with a flying acrobatic volley that De Dea reacted quickly to stop after he initially spilled it.
David de Gea again came to United's rescue by showing why he is one of the top goalkeepers around when he stopped a Rachid Ghezzal free kick destined for the top corner on 77 minutes.
United had to wait until three minutes to full time to have their first shot on target in the second half, and it fell the way of substitute Romelu Lukaku who fizzled one in from 18 yards but Schmeichel parried it away.
Vardy had Leicester's best chance to equalise just a minute later but his strike from Barne's left wing cut back went straight at David de Gea, as United held on to move a place up the table to 5th position
