Milner Reveals Reason Behind Hatred For Man United

By Joshua Walters

Liverpool’s James Milner has revealed his father brought him up to hate Manchester United and says he was even barred from wearing red coloured shirts.

Born in Wortley, Leeds, Milner grew up under the care of his father, Peter Milner, who supported Leeds United to the hilt.

Leeds United fans abhor Manchester United, and Milner confessed to FourFourTwo his father installed that hatred in him and forbid him from wearing red shirts because the Old Trafford outfit identifies itself with the colour.

“It's true, yes,” Milner admitted when asked about his father's influences. “Obviously Leeds fans are brought up to dislike Manchester United, as rivals, so red wasn’t allowed.”

“I didn’t have any red shirts or anything, and the first time I ever wore it was probably for England.”

Milner has played for Leeds, Newcastle, Aston Villa, Manchester City and currently with Liverpool, and says his father lifted the red-colour ban after he signed for the Reds.

"My father joked when I signed for Liverpool that it was the first time he’d be happy to see me regularly in red."
