Manchester City Break Club Record To Sign Rodri
By Joshua Walters
Manchester City have completed the signing of Rodri from Atletico Madrid for a club record fee of £62.8 million.
Rodri who signed a five-year contract with Manchester City becomes Pep Guardiola’s second summer signing after Angelino rejoined the side from PSV Eindhoven.
The newly signed defensive midfielder will don the Citizens’ number 16 shirt which was once worn by Sergio Aguero when he joined the club from Atletico Madrid.
After penning the new deal, Rodri revealed his delight in joining the side as he is ready to help his new club continue with their winning streak.
“What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I’m looking forward to being part of such a talented squad,” the central midfielder said.
“It’s not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times.
“I can’t wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates and hopefully we can achieve great things together. It’s a style that excites me, as do the club’s ambitions.”
Spending just a season at Atletico Madrid, the 23-year-old featured thirty-four times for the Los Rojiblancos in the Spanish LaLiga scoring 3 goals with one assist as his eight appearances in the Champions League provided no goal.
Rodri is seen as the best option to replace Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho should the latter end his spell with the Premier League champions.
The fee for purchasing the former Villarreal player transcends the club’s previous record of £60 million for Riyad Mahrez who was recruited last year.
