Man City Pip Burnley To Close In On Title
By Max Wise
Manchester City are two wins away from retaining the Premier League title after a 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday.
The win marks the champions’ 12th league win on the spin as they leapfrog Liverpool to top the pile with just two games remaining.
Sergio Aguero, with his 20th league goal of the season, takes Manchester City onto 92 points with Liverpool one point further back in second place.
The first half produced few goalscoring opportunities with Burnley holding their own at the back as Manchester City probed to find the opener.
A loose ball in the 22nd minute put Chris Wood in on goal but a poor first touch allowed Ederson to get off his line and smother the ball, before Bernardo Silva shot straight at Tom Heaton in the Burnley goal from a Raheem Sterling pass.
The Champions upped the tempo after the break, and Aguero stung the arms of Heaton with a fierce strike just after the restart.
One of Manchester City’s numerous incursions into the Burnley penalty area caused pandemonium with the ball eventually falling to Bernardo Silva, but the Portuguese’s effort was pushed away by Heaton in the 52nd minute.
Manchester City fans might have begun to think it was not going to be their day, but Aguero calmed those fears with the opener in the 62nd minute.
Another scramble in the Burnley penalty area fell to the Argentine striker, whose effort was cleared off the line by Matt Lowton but referee Paul Tierney rightly signaled that the ball had crossed the line for the opener.
City almost made it two through substitute Gabriel Jesus, who rounded Tom Heaton but saw his effort cleared off the line by Ben Mee in the 75th minute.
