Liverpool Delight As Chelsea End Manchester City
By Max Wise
Manchester City’s unbeaten streak in the Premier League came to an end on Saturday as Chelsea topped the Citizens 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
A lot separated the two sides as Pep Guardiola’s side which hitherto had a record three goals per game in recent games, looked toothless up front and ineffective with their passing game.
City’s misery was compounded with the spurning of a couple of chances until N'Golo Kante broke the deadlock in the 45th minute from Eden Hazard's cutback before David Luiz secured the points with a header in the 78th minute.
The result brings back life to Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea, following their two losses in their last three games, and returns them to 3rd place on the league table.
The biggest beneficiary, however, is Liverpool, who takes advantage of City’s slip to keep themselves at the top of the table with 42 points; a point more than the dethroned leaders, having leapfrogged the champions after a 4-0 win at Huddersfield earlier in the day.
Manchester City’s wastefulness started in the 9th minute when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga denied an unmarked Raheem Sterling from placing a low shot into the middle of the goal.
Leroy Sane came close to scoring in the 39th minute, but shot into the waiting arms of Kepa, a minute before the attacker’s goalbound shot was blocked to safety.
N'Golo Kante broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time by going one-on-one with Ederson to score with a shot into the roof of the net.
Ederson saved Willian’s effort in the 59th minute, and Kyle Walker aimed a free kick at the left post three minutes later, but could not beat Kepa.
City kept pressing with an eye for an equaliser, but a quick counter attack was completed with a shot from Ross Barkley which deflected to a corner whose resulting kick was met with a precise header into the net by David Luiz.
