Liverpool vice-captain, James Milner, says he would be supporting Manchester United when the Red Devils come up against Manchester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Milner has never supported Manchester United in his life, but will bury his pride and throw his weight behind the Red Devils as a positive result will give Liverpool the advantage in the title hunt with Manchester City.
Milner scored from a spot-kick as Liverpool beat Cardiff City 2-0 on Sunday to move above Manchester City, but the champions can reclaim the top spot with victory over their crosstown rivals in the Manchester derby.
Liverpool have lost just one league game all season, a 2-1 loss to Manchester City in January, but the champions will secure the title if they win their remaining four games, and Milner admits he will not be watching the game as the tension towards the season’s end builds up.
"First time in my life," Milner said when asked about supporting United.
"But I won't be watching. It's a bit of a waste of energy, willing the ball in the other goal. I've no idea what I'll do, maybe go out for some food."
"It's frustrating to think we've had one defeat all year and it might not be enough," added the 33-year-old, who spent five years with Manchester City and won two premier league titles at the club.
"We just need to win the rest of our games. If we do that and it's not good enough then you have to hold your hands up and say 'well-done City'.
"They're a top team, they've done it before and are grinding it out. All we can do is win the rest of our games and put them under pressure."
