Inter Struggle To Beat Fiorentina
By Nigel Phillips
Inter Milan made it two consecutive Serie A wins on Tuesday, but with yet another unconvincing 2-1 victory over Fiorentina at the Giuseppe Meazza.
Luciano Spalletti’s Inter had to rely on Danilo D’Ambrosio on a night where Fiorentina dominated the hosts for the most part of the game but lacked accuracy upfront.
Despite an electric start, the hosts started looking rather flat in the second half and were lucky to go in front in the 45th minute through a Mauro Icardi penalty goal awarded after video reviews.
Matias Vecino got the ball and beat an opponent, but his run was stopped by the referee Paolo Mazzoleni who suspected a handball.
Mazzoleni confirmed his suspensions from the VAR and awarded a penalty which Icardi put at the bottom right corner past the outstretched arm of Alban Lafont.
Federico Chiesa leveled six minutes after half-time with a long-range shot which deflected off Milan Skriniar, prompting a dominant performance from the visitors.
Fiorentina dominated the game, and looked the likelier of the two to grab the winner, but conceded against the run of play in the 77th minute. Mauro Icardi displayed great vision to send a pass to Danilo D'Ambrosio (Inter), who showed brilliant composure, inside the box, to bury the ball into the bottom right corner.
Inter have 10 points from their opening six games and sit fifth on the Serie A table with five points below champions Juventus who play on Wednesday at home to Bologna.
Tuesday’s was the second time Inter Milan were winning a game with a late goal after similar showpiece against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League and Sampdoria in Serie A.
