Manchester United woes continued on Tuesday as Jose Mourinho’s men were crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the Old Trafford to Championship side Derby County 8-7 on penalties.

Mourinho faced off with Frank Lampard, who he coached at Chelsea, and Juan Mata set the Portuguese trainer in the front seat after just three minutes when he fed on Jesse Lingard pass to latch a left footed shot from the right side of the box to the bottom left corner.

The Red Devils were held by 1-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at the Old Trafford last Saturday, and thoughts of turning things around on Tuesday night diminished in the 59th minute when Harry Wilson left-footed a free kick into the top left corner.

Mourinho and Manchester United fell behind Lampard, who is in his debut season as manager, and the lower-tier side in the 85th minute when Jack Marriott headed in from close range to the top left corner.

Marouane Fellaini gave the hosts a lifeline five minutes into injury time with a header from the six-yard box to the bottom left corner to set the stage for penalty shootouts.

Mason Mount converted Derby’s first penalty with a right footed shot to the top left corner, Romelu Lukaku canceled it with a left footed shot to the bottom right corner, before Florian Jozefzoon and Ashley Young took turns to cancel each other out.

Harry Wilson put the hosts ahead with a left footed shot to the centre of the goal, Marouane Fellaini drew parity for the hosts with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner, Jack Marriott converted his kick with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner before Fred canceled him out with a left footed shot to the top right corner.

Anthony Martial canceled out Bradley Johnson’s kick, but the lead was restored again by Derby County and canceled out again by Diogo Dalot only for Craig Forsyth score for Nemanja Matic to equalise with a left footed shot to the bottom left corner.

Richard Keogh put the visitors in front again with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner, and Scott Carson wrecked havoc for the hosts and sent the visitors to ecstasy by pulling a good save to deny Phill Jones from burying a right footed shot in the bottom right corner.
