Hummels Denies Having A Grudge With Low
By Joshua Walters
Bayern Munich Mats Hummels has denied having a feud with German national team coach Joachim Low after the latter axed him from the team.
Low did not only end the call for Hummels in the national team, but also brought that of Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng to an end as he opted to give more young players the chance in the last international break.
Low’s decision follows Die Mannschaft's poor run at the Russia 2018 World Cup, where the then defending champions left the competition in the group stage.
Hummels had played for the national team for eight years, and where as he claimed not to have any problem with Low’s decision to oust him from the squad, the center-back wished that the coach had handled the situation differently.
"I myself do things that other people aren't happy with, so I am not resentful about decisions other people make which have an effect on me.
"It was impossible for Löw to find the perfect way of informing us.
"It was probably difficult for him to find a way in which we could all leave the discussion feeling like everything had been done in the right way.
"I did feel snubbed in a way. Thomas, Jerome and I all felt that there could have been a bit more appreciation for us. But my eight years playing for Germany were great."
The former Borussia Dortmund player came close in scoring in the side’s last World Cup game against South Korea, but failed as his header went a whisker of the crossbar.
Hummels is convinced that ball would have changed the situation for Germany at the World Cup and also avert his ostracism from the team if it went in.
"I've discussed that moment time and again with my friends. The header against South Korea had such an enormous effect, not only on the World Cup but also on what is happening now.
"If I had scored, then we would have gone through and a lot of things would have turned out differently.
"The Mats Hummels who plays for Germany has been pushed aside in my head for the time being".
