Chelsea Hunt For Top-Four Place With Tottenham Win
By Max Wise
Chelsea put two unanswered goals past Tottenham Hotspurs at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening to recover from their Wembley wobble and reignite their hopes of making the top four.
The pre-match talk centered around whether or not Kepa will be in goal for the hosts following his Wembley histrionics but the world's most expensive goalkeeper was dropped for Willy Caballero.
Chelsea's victory keeps them in the hunt for a top-four place but Spurs have lost ground on their title challengers with Arsenal breathing down their neck ahead of this weekend's North London derby.
Chelsea were the brighter of the two sides in the opening exchanges and almost took the lead within the first ten minutes but Gonzalo Higuain's miscued shot rattled against the post and bounced back into play.
Hugo Lloris nearly put Tottenham in trouble a few minutes later when he misplaced a pass straight into the path of Pedro. The ball eventually fell the way of Higuain but the Argentine's curled effort narrowly missed the target.
Harry Winks came close for Spurs with two minutes to end the first period when his loopy effort from 25 yards flew over the head of Caballero and came off the crossbar.
Pedro finally gave Chelsea the lead in the 57th minute after the Spanish world cup winner cut inside Toby Alderweireld from Azpilicueta's pass before threading a shot through the legs of Hugo Lloris
Tottenham shot themselves in the foot with a horrible own goal six minutes to full time when Kieran Trippier's attempted back pass to his on-rushing goalkeeper went past him straight into the net.
