Arsenal striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, has set his sights on overtaking Mohamed Salah and Sergio Aguero in the race for the Premier League golden boot after notching the winner in Monday’s narrow win over Watford at Vicarage Road.
Aubameyang forced an error from Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster in the 10th minute, when he charged down on the hosts’ number one and deflected his clearance into the net for the only goal of the game.
The Gabonese international’s opportunistic strike was his 18th goal in the Premier League this season, taking him to within one goal of leaders Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero, who have 19 goals apiece.
Not far behind in the top scorer race are Sadio Mane, who has 18 goals, whiles Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane are all o17 league goals for the season.
Asked by Sky Sports after Monday’s game whether he can win the golden boot, Aubameyang answered: "Yeah, why not. I feel confident."
"The race is going on. I know it's a tough battle. I'm confident that I will carry on.
"I was confident. It's a long time I wanted to score a goal like this. Tonight, it went through. I was confident. Normally goalkeepers, they don't really know if you're coming back to them. It was a good goal for me, I like it."
Aubameyang won the golden boot in his last full season in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, where his 31 league goals saw him beat stiff competition from Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski in the 2016/2017 season.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah won the Premier League golden boot last season with 32 goals.
