Alderweireld Describes London Derby As Biggest In The World
By Nigel Philips
Toby Alderweireld has described the north London derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs as arguably the biggest in the world as the two sides face off in the Premier League on Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs trek to Arsenal in day-14 of the Premier League with the hosts unbeaten in 17 games and 5th on the league log with 27 points.
Spurs moved to 3rd with 30 points after halting Chelsea's 12-game unbeaten run last Saturday, before labouring to beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.
Alderweireld told ESPN Spurs are in good form ahead of the clash, which he said was the biggest in club football rivalry.
"Everybody who follows football knows how big this game is," Alderweireld said. "It's one of the biggest, maybe the biggest derby in the world so everybody knows it."
"I think we can beat everyone if we're on it. Against Chelsea and then against Inter, two big teams, we've shown that we can get a very high level."
Jan Vertonghen, who played his first match for almost two months against Inter after recovering from a hamstring injury is looking forward to the game.
"It's going to be massive," he said. "They [Arsenal] look like a different team and it will be a big game."
"It's always nice games to play at the Emirates, with two teams who want to play football and want to win. We have respect for each other in a good way and I'm looking forward to it, but I need a rest first."
"They look like a solid team and they've won many games in a row, so they're confident, but we're confident too."
"We're feeling well and working towards our best form. At the start, we were winning games, but maybe not in our best form. We're growing now with every game. Chelsea were obviously very good and Inter Milan now, so hopefully we can keep this going for Sunday."
