Tielemans Thumbs Up VAR Intervention In Leicester’s FA Cup Triumph
Youri Tielemans thanked the intervention of VAR after Leicester City lifted their first ever FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday.
Tielemans was the hero of the day for the Foxes as his 63rd minute long range strike gave Brendan Rodgers’ men victory in front of 21,000 spectators.
Leicester had a heart-in-mouth moment as Chelsea looked to have levelled matters in the dying embers of the game with an own goal from Wes Morgan but VAR intervened and ruled out the goal after Ben Chilwell was adjudged to have strayed offside in the build-up.
VAR has divided opinions since its introduction to English football but Tielemans was full of gratitude that the technology came to Leicester’s rescue in a cagey encounter.
"Thank you VAR! Really, what an amazing thing that is!", Tielemans laughed when asked about the decision by BT Sport.
"It's a tough decision but when you have to make it, you have to make it. Maybe it was tight but it was offside, and you have to give that call."
After four previous losses in the FA Cup final, Tielemans was glad his goal finally helped bring the trophy home.
“It feels really good! It’s amazing! I am really glad to score the goal that helped the team to win the game," Tielemans added to the BBC.
"It was a really tight game. To score in the final ... what a goal that was! I am really happy for the team and the fans! The goal was really good!
"It is really special to have the fans in today. I hope everyone was safe. And the fans watching it from home, I hope they are proud of us. I am sure they are.
