Ndombele Targets France Place For EURO 2020
Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele is targeting a place in the France squad for this summer’s European Championships despite the competition for places in his position.
Ndombele won the last of his six France caps in June 2019.
The 24-year-old joined Tottenham from Olympique Lyon in the summer of 2019 for a club record £64m but failed to impress in his debut season in North London.
Ndombele has turned his fortunes around for Jose Mourinho’s men this season, making 37 appearances in all competitions and scoring six goals.
Ndombele was recalled to Didier Deschamps’ squad for last August’s international fixtures but pulled out at the eleventh hour after returning a positive coronavirus test.
The former Amiens midfielder is hoping to have his name mentioned when Deschamps reveals the France roster for next week’s international games as well as the delayed EUROS in June and July.
Asked why he thinks Deschamps has overlooked him, Ndombele told RMC Sport: "I was simply less efficient. I always want to be called up, but there are a lot of players in my position, good players, and the competition is there.
"But I have tried to raise my head since the start of the season and do my best to be called into the next squad.
"When I enter the field, I know that I will be watched by the staff. Even when you're hurt, you think about it.
"I always want to be selected; it's something beautiful for a player to be in the France team. You tell yourself that you are one of the 23 best in your country.
"In addition, this is a great generation, a very good team. We all want to be called. I'm not going to lie, the France team, I miss it."
"The most important list is the one before the Euros," Ndombele added.
"It's always better to be called now, we want to be on all the lists, but if the coach calls me just for the Euros, I take it too."
