Mount Hails ‘Special’ Ballon D’or Nomination

Mason Mount has described his nomination for the Ballon D’or as a ‘dream’.

The 22-year-old was one of five Chelsea players nominated for football’s most prestigious individual honour last week.

After a series on loan spells, Mount only broke into the Chelsea first team at the start of the 2019/2020 season but can now count himself as one of the best 30 players in the world.

Mount was instrumental in Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League triumph last season, supplying the crucial assist for Kai Havertz’s winner in the final against Manchester City. He also helped Thomas Tuchel’s side secure a top four finish and reach the FA Cup final.

Mount also played a key role this summer as Gareth Southgate’s England side reached the final of EURO 2020, albeit losing out to Italy.

The former Derby County loanee does not expect to win the Ballon d’or but says earning a nomination alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is ‘special.’

"It was special," Mount said ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary on Tuesday.

"I probably found out at exactly the same time as everyone else so to see that and be alongside those names it is obviously a dream.

"I think for all the years that you work hard, dedicate and then see something like that it shows that it pays off and it's just the start, it doesn't stop now."

Asked about his prospects of winning the title of world's best footballer, Mount said: "I doubt it but you never know. The most important thing for me is that I continue trying to hit the levels I've hit before and go even further."
