Ligue 1 Season Cancelled Amid Coronavirus Concerns
Professional Football League (LFP) has been forced to abandon the current French football season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
France Prime Minister Edouard Philippe made an announcement stating that all sporting activities across the country are banned until at least September.
Professional football in France was suspended at the start of March to check the spread of Covid-19, and the LFP met last week to announce plans to resume the season which was scheduled for June 17.
Paris Saint-Germain are looking for their third successive league title, as they comfortably sit first after opening a 12-point lead over Marseille. The LFP will now meet to determine the best way to end the season.
In a speech to the National Assembly on Tuesday, Philippe insisted he would not allow football to resume not even behind closed doors, due to the risk of a second outbreak of Covid-19.
“The 2019-2020 season of professional sports, including football, will not be able to resume,” the 49-year-old said.
“It will be possible, on sunny days, to practice an individual sporting activity outdoors, obviously respecting the rules of social distancing.”
“It will not be possible, neither to practice sport in covered places, nor team or contact sports.”
French Ligue 1 have become the third big European league to cut short their season after Belgian First Division A and the Dutch Eredivisie.
