In his 402nd appearance as a professional, Sane was sent off for the first time in his career in the 48th minute for shoving Austria defender Phillipp Mwene.

Germany would go on to lose 2-0 as Julian Nagelsmann's reign continues in difficult fashion.

"A night to forget in Vienna. I apologized to my teammates in the dressing room for my actions," the Bayern Munich star wrote on his X profile.

"This is something that cannot happen with all the emotion and ambition, especially in our current situation.

"I would also like to apologize to our fans. We have a lot of work to do to make 2024 a successful year for us."

Germany are due to host the European Championships next summer but won just three of their eleven games in 2023, losing six of them.

At club level, Sane has had an impressive start to the 2023/2024 season.

The 27-year-old has scored nine goals and contributed seven assists in 18 appearances across all competitions this season.
