Lampard Defends Rudiger Over Mourinho Allegations
Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has defended Antonio Rudiger after the Tottenham Hotspur boss accused the German of playacting to get Son Heung-Min sent off in the London derby on Sunday.
Chelsea run out 2-0 winners on the day with Willian scoring two first half goals to extend their lead over Tottenham to six points in the race for the top four.
One major talking point in the game was Son’s second half dismissal after the South Korean international caught Rudiger in the ribs with his boot following an aerial challenge.
Following a VAR review Son was given a straight red card and Mourinho was livid with the decision, accusing Rudiger of deliberately getting his man sent off.
“I hope Rudiger will recover from broken ribs because he will have broken ribs for sure,” Mourinho sarcastically said after the game.
"In some countries, like mine, for example with our culture we used to say clever player."
"But in this country, and one of the reasons I fell in love with this country in 2004, we don't call them clever, we call them other things that I refuse to call."
Lampard was however adamant Son deserved to be sent off, dismissing Mourinho’s assessment of the situation.
"It was a red card. I don't know how much he's supposed to make out of it," he said.
"I think Son is a great player and, I don't know him, from the outside he looks like a great person. But sometimes in football you have instinctive moments.
"It happened, it was a bit of a reflex. Maybe sometimes in a game where you're having it really tough and it's going against you a little bit and I think it was that [type of] moment.
"I will not have any words said about how Toni Rudiger dealt with that."
