Everton Lose Jean-Philippe Gbamin For Another Six Months

Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s harrowing start to life as an Everton player continued on Thursday when he suffered an Achilles injury in training that is set to keep him out of action for at least the next six months.

Everton Lose Jean-Philippe Gbamin For Another Six Months

Gbamin joined the Toffees from German Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05 in the summer of 2019 as a replacement for Iddrisa Gana Gueye, who had been snapped up by Paris Saint Germain, but the Ivorian international made just two appearances before he was struck down by a thigh injury.

Gbamin’s injury was supposed to keep him out of action for the entirety of the 2019/2020 season, but with the coronavirus pandemic disrupting the footballing calendar and putting the campaign on hold, it was hoped that the former Lens midfielder could return to play some part in Everton’s final nine games of the season.

Those hopes have however been dashed and Gbamin might not play again for the rest of the year.

"Gbamin is set to undergo surgery next week after suffering a serious Achilles injury in training," a statement on Everton's website read.

"The injury, sustained in a non-contact situation at USM Finch Farm, is unrelated to the quadriceps problem Gbamin had been working his way back from since August last year.

"Everyone at the club is devastated for JP and we will ensure he gets all the support he needs throughout this challenging time."

Everton were 12th on the league table before the season was suspended. They will host Liverpool when the league resumes from June 17.
