Peter Schmeichel Interested In Man United Dir. Of Football Role

Another member of Manchester United’s treble-winning squad of 1999 is eyeing a top position at the club after former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel announced he is considering putting his name forward for the club’s director of football role.

Schmeichel was in goal when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was recently appointed Manchester United caretaker manager, scored a late winner to seal a 2-1 comeback win over Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final.

Manchester United are reportedly on the hunt for a director of football following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, who opposed such a move by the Old Trafford club.

Peter Schmeichel was the undoubted number one goalkeeper for the best part of 8 years at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy, three FA Cups and one League cup.

The 55-year-old former Danish international has had very little involvement in football since he retired in 2003, but that will definitely not serve as a stumbling block to his desire as the club’s next director of football.

"I'm actually thinking about putting my name in there," Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I really want to get involved in football again at some point. I know I'm getting older, but my life has just turned out a different way after I retired from football."

"What's really important is to get the United culture and identity back.

"I would like to see [the job go to] someone who has played there and can bring some of that Alex Ferguson mentality back in the whole of the football club."

"I'm considering if I have the qualities, and if I come up to an answer to that question, then I will put my name in the hat."

"I'll have a good think about this over Christmas and make a decision about it."
