Breaking: CAF President Ahmad Ahmad Arrested In Paris

By Joshua Walters

The President of Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad has been arrested at the Berri Hotel in Paris by the French police.

The former Malagasy cabinet minister, was in last month reported to Fifa's ethics commitee for alleged corruption and misappropriation of funds by CAF general secretary Amr Fahmy, who was then fired.

As specified by Jeune Africa, the CAF president was detained in Paris at 8:30 am as he is set to face the anti-corruption agency's Central Office for Combating Corruption and Financial Tax Crimes (Oclif).

Ahmad is said to have embezzled funds close to $830,000 having forced CAF to order sports wear through a French company called Tactical Steel rather than dealing directly with the manufacturers and at inflated prices.

Fifa, in a released statement after the alleged arrest of Ahmad Ahmad said:

“FIFA is unaware of the details surrounding this investigation and is therefore not in a position to make any comment on it specifically.”

“FIFA has taken note of the alleged events concerning Mr. Ahmad Ahmad, who is being questioned by the French authorities in relation to allegations related to his mandate while President of CAF.

“FIFA is now clean from the scandals that tarnished its reputation and this same determination should prevail in governing bodies such as confederations. FIFA will be at the forefront of ensuring that this is enforced by everyone involved in football."

Ahmad Ahmad's arrest came a day after CAF arrived at a decision to cancel the African Champions League win by Tunisian club, Esperance Tunis as they concluded on a replay of the second leg fixture with Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca.
