Former Germany international Bastian Schweinsteiger has called for a reintroduction of Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller into the national team following Tuesday’s humiliating 6-0 loss to Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

The defeat was the heaviest the Die Mannschaft have suffered for 89 years and it cost them a place in next year’s Nations League finals.

Muller and Boateng were ostracized from the German national team after they failed to qualify from the group stages of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, having been part of the side that won the tournament in Brazil four years earlier.

The pair have however gone on to star for their club side Bayern Munich, culminating in winning a famous treble of Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League last season, and there have been calls for them to be reinstated into the national team.

Germany manager Joachim Low has defended his decision to leave the experienced pair out but Schweinsteiger, who was also part of the 2014 World Cup winning side, believes their quality could prove valuable during a difficult time.

“The national coach and his team have one opinion but unfortunately I personally have a different one,” the former midfielder explained to ARD.

“Players like Jerome Boateng and Thomas Muller won the treble with the best team in Europe. They play regularly in the first team and are quality German players. Why aren't they in the national team?

“In games like this especially, it's important to have players on the pitch that are a cut above, who have experience, who have quality. You could see that we don't have the required quality yet.”
