Lloris Claims Liverpool Being Denied Title Will Be ‘Cruel’
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris believes it will be unfair if Liverpool were to be denied the Premier League title as the Coronavirus pandemic threatens to grind the season to a halt.
The Reds were well on course to ending their three-decade wait for a first league title when the top flight was put on hold, with Covid-19 causing over 28,000 casualties in the UK.
Although Premier League clubs are committed to completing the season when it is safe to do so, there are still fears as to whether those plans can still go ahead.
Despite Lloris’ Tottenham side sitting eighth on the league table, the 33-year-old reckons it will be particularly disheartening to see Jurgen Klopp’s men miss out on the title in the prevailing circumstances.
"We are in a situation where everyone wants to finish and have the decision on the field," France’s 2018 World Cup winning captain told L'Equipe.
"It would be terrible if everything ended like that nine [matches] before the end of the Premier League.
"It would also be cruel for Liverpool with the lead they have … they are almost champions. As with everyone, there would be a taste of unfinished business. In addition, we are entering the most exciting period, the most beautiful moment of the season."
On the prospect of the season resuming behind closed doors, Lloris added: "It will be weird wherever it happens. Football is not a closed-door sport,"
"Without the spectators, it is not the same. This is not how I see football. We are here to gather, share our emotions.
"We all want full stadiums with atmosphere, fans, colour and songs, but here we must take the context into consideration."
