Champions Manchester City were held to a disappointing goalless draw in the Premier League on Saturday while there were vital wins for Liverpool and Arsenal too.
At the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City could not find a way past a well-drilled Southampton side, who dug deep to take away a point in a 0-0 draw. VAR came to Man City’s rescue as it overturned referee John Moss’ decision to award Southampton a penalty while Raheem Sterling had a late effort ruled out for offside.
Martin Odegaard’s sumptuous 30th minute free kick gave Arsenal back-to-back wins for the first time this season at Burnley. The Gunners lost their first three games of the season but have bounced back with two straight wins without conceding a single goal.
Norwich City’s pointless start to the season continued as they lost 3-1 to fellow newly promoted side Watford at home, with Ismaila Sarr notching a brace for the visitors.
Liverpool went top of the Premier League with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace. African trio Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita were all on the scoresheet. Mane’s goal was his 100th in all competitions for Liverpool.
In the early kick-off on Saturday, Brentford went away to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 despite having a man sent off and Leeds United drew 1-1 with Newcastle United on Friday.
