Bayern Munich Lose Thiago For Rest Of Bundesliga Season

Bayern Munich have been robbed off the services of Thiago Alcantara for three weeks, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the Bundesliga season.

Bayern Munich Lose Thiago For Rest Of Bundesliga Season

Thiago has been battling a groin injury since Bayern Munich’s first game back from the coronavirus enforced break last month.

The 29-year-old Spain international lasted the entire duration of Bayern’s return to action against Union Berlin but was unavailable for the club’s next three games, including the victory over Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker.

Thiago returned to action when he climbed off the bench against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend and he played the final 29 minutes of Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal semi-final.

The former Barcelona midfielder did not appear fully fit in either of the two games upon his return and has now undergone a groin surgery which has curtailed his Bundesliga season, though he could return for the DFB-Pokal final against Leverkusen on July 4. The Bundesliga season concludes on June 27.

Head coach Hansi Flick said in a news conference on Friday: "Thiago has had a groin operation. He will be out for three weeks. We decided between us to get it done now. It's possible he will be back for the cup final."

Thiago has made 24 Bundesliga appearances this season, scoring three goals.

Bayern Munich hold a seven-point advantage over Borussia Dortmund at the top of the league table, and are just two wins away from securing their eighth straight Bundesliga crown.
