Leaders Manchester City failed to wrap up the league title, losing 2-1 at home to Chelsea, to put their celebrations on ice for a few more days at least.

City took the lead on the cusp of halftime through Raheem Sterling and the hosts could have put some daylight between the two Champions League finalist but Aguero, who will leave at the end of the season after ten years at the Etihad Stadium, could not outsmart Edouard Mendy with a cheeky spot kick, after Gabriel Jesus was tumbled in the box by Billy Gilmour just before the break.

Chelsea rallied back after the break and got their equaliser through Hakim Ziyech and Marcos Alonso struck at the death to hand Thomas Tuchel’s men all three points.

Aguero took to social media after the game to issue an apology to the City fraternity, with his miss the fourth time Pep Guardiola’s men have fluffed their lines from 12 yards this season.

"I would like to apologise to my team-mates, staff and supporters for missing the penalty," Aguero wrote on Twitter. "It was a bad decision and I take full responsibility."

Guardiola refused to criticise Aguero for the miss, telling Sky Sports after the game: “It is his decision.” “The taker has to take decisions.

“I say to him, take one decision and take it full commitment. He decided to do it this way.”
