Shaw Reveals He Nearly Lost His Leg

Luke Shaw has revealed he nearly lost his leg after suffering multiple fractures in his right leg in Manchester United’s 2-1 Champions League opening day defeat at PSV Eindhoven in 2016.

Shaw suffered the accident following a tackle from Hector Moreno, and medics spent ten minutes treating the player on the pitch before carrying him to the hospital.

The injury left Luke Shaw on the sideline for 11 months, and the English international told journalists on Tuesday, on his return to the England national team, he would have lost his leg but for a failed flight.

"I didn’t know that until six months later when the doctor told me. At the time, they were thinking about flying me back. If I’d flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots in the leg."

“I have got two scars down my leg where they had to cut it open and pull them out.”

Luke Shaw was signed from Southampton in 2004 on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee with reports said could rise to £30m.

Shaw was gradually warming himself into the Man United first team and the Three Lions before the injury.

The defender struggled for form after his return to action and, as a result, lost his place in the Man United and the national setups.

Shaw has been different in the 2018/19 season, where he has featured in every Man United league game thus far and that has earned him a recall to the national team for the UEFA Nation’s League game against Spain and a friendly Switzerland.
