Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller is set to sit out the Bavarians’ crucial UEFA Champions league clash with Liverpool after the European football governing body confirmed a two-game ban for the German international.

Muller was sent off in Bayern Munich’s last group game away to Ajax Amsterdam after kicking Nicholas Tagliafico in the head although he maintained it was not intentional.

The 2014 World Cup winner apologised for the challenge on his twitter account after the game with a post which read  "I am very sorry for that what happened yesterday! Was not intentional. Get well soon."

That sending off was the first in Muller’s career and Bayern Munich have indicated that they will appeal against the decision.

The 29-year-old has scored five goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich this season, providing six assists.

Bayern Munich will first travel to Anfield for the first leg on February 19 with the second leg slated for March 13 at the Allianz Arena.
