Bayern Munich has confirmed the acquisition of Atletico Madrid defender Lucas Hernandez for a fee of €80 million ($90m).

The transfer which was announced on Wednesday by the club through Sporting Director, Hasan Salihamidzic, will see the French World Cup winner join the Bavarians in the summer.

Hernandez has penned a five-year deal with the Bavarians stated in an official statement by the club.

The left back's transfer fee makes him the most expensive player to have joined Bayern Munich in the club’s history, a record which previously was held by Corentin Tolisso, who was signed by Bayern Munich from Lyon for a fee of €41.5 million in 2017.

The €80 million does not only make the player the expensive player in the club’s history, but also one of the most expensive defenders in the sports as well as one of the expensive defenders to be signed by a German club.

Hasan Salihamidzic said: “I am very happy that we have managed to sign Lucas Hernandez, who is a World Cup winner and one of the best defensive players in the world."

"Lucas can play in central defence or at left-back. He will strengthen our team and continue the tradition of fantastic French players at our club."

The newly recruited player also expressed his delight for the switch as he rendered appreciation to Atletico Madrid and the fans.

"This is a very important day in my footballing career.

"Bayern are one of the best clubs in the world. I will be proud to compete for all titles for Bayern in the future.

"I would like to thank Atletico, the management, the coaches, my teammates and the fans for 12 wonderful years in Madrid.

"Atletico will always be a part of me, but I am now happy to be making the next step at Bayern."

The French left-back was recruited by Atletico Madrid as a youth player in 2007 and has spent 12 years in the Spanish capital.

Hernandez has played 110 games for Atletico Madrid in all competitions and was also a key figure in France’s World Cup glory in Russia 2018.
