Shearer Fears For Arsenal’s Top Flight Status After Defeat At Everton

Mikel Arteta’s side were beaten 2-1 at Goodison Park, with Yerry Mina’s headed goal on the stroke of half time proving crucial after Nicolas Pepe’s penalty had cancelled out Rob Holding’s own goal opener for the hosts.

The defeat has left Arsenal 15^th on the Premier League table, just four points above the relegation zone, in what has been their worst start to a season since the 1974/1975 campaign.

‘Awful. No creativity, players going through the motions, not working hard enough, not closing down,’ the ex-England striker said on Match of the Day.

‘Arteta should be a worried man relying on that group of players to try and save his job. Twelve goals all season, they have no options.

‘Against Everton, Pepe was not prepared to get into the box, he was jogging, sometimes walking. He has got to do more.

‘There are a few players in that team who are not giving everything for the manager. Arsenal are never going to score goals playing like that.’

Asked if they will stay up, Shearer replied: ‘I wouldn't be so sure. Not with that starting team and the attitude of some of those players.’

Arsenal are back in action on Tuesday when they host Manchester City in the EFL Cup quarterfinals.
