Premier League Clubs Agree To Extend Summer Transfer Window To September

For the past two seasons, the summer transfer window in England has always closed a day before the campaign begins.

Majority of the clubs agreed to close the window early two seasons ago with the aim of preventing the uncertainties that surround the future of unsettled players while the season is in session.

It was hoped that the rest of Europe would follow suit but that does not look like happening anytime soon.

The situation placed English clubs at a disadvantage as other European clubs could come in for their players once the season begun without they having the opportunity to replace them.

The 2020/2021 Premier League season will start on August 8, and with August 31 being a bank holiday in England, the summer transfer window will close on September 1.

A Premier League statement read: “At a shareholders’ meeting today, Premier League clubs voted to adopt a change to the summer transfer window closing date for season 2020/21.

“This will move the closing date back to the traditional point at the end of August/early September.

“The 2020 closing date will therefore be 17:00 BST on 1 September (31 August 2020 being a UK Bank Holiday).

“Clubs agreed after discussing the topic at length at previous shareholders’ meetings.”
