Manchester City missed from the spot for the third time this season when Ilkay Gundogan blazed over the bar against Liverpool over the weekend although the Citizens still came away with a 4-1 win to cement their place at the top of the Premier League table.

City also missed six of the 16 penalties they were awarded last season, with Guardiola joking that the Brazilian goalkeeper could be handed the responsibility from 12 yards if the outfield players kept fluffing their lines.

Ederson, who has not taken a penalty in his professional career, has proclaimed in the past that he is the best penalty taker at the club.

With City currently missing the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, Guardiola could fall on Ederson to take their next spot kick.

"He has to save the goals, make a good build up and after we’ll see what happens," Guardiola said, ahead of City's FA Cup fifth round trip to Swansea City on Wednesday evening.

"It depends on the players. Now Sergio's not fit and Kevin, who is an incredibly good taker. We will see tomorrow, it depends on the line-up, but he’s an option, of course he is. He’s a good taker.

"The penalty taker has to be the personality and have incredible, huge confidence in himself to say OK I'm going to shoot and I'm going to score."
