Two Southampton fans were detained and spoken to by Police after they were caught appearing to make aeroplane gestures towards Cardiff City fans in relation to Emiliano Sala’s death on Saturday.

Cardiff City came away with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southampton at the Saint Mary’s stadium in a game that marked the first time the Bluebirds were in action since Sala’s body was recovered on Thursday.

Southampton acknowledged later on Saturday that they are aware of the incident, and plan to issue bans to the individuals involved.

"Such behaviour has no place in our game and will not be tolerated at St Mary's," a club statement read.

"Southampton Football Club can confirm that two fans were detained and had their details taken by police during our match against Cardiff City on Saturday.

"The club will continue to work with Hampshire Police to identify any individuals deemed to have made indecent gestures towards Cardiff supporters.

"The club will be taking an extremely firm stance against anyone involved and intends to ban those supporters identified."

Sala was flying from France to England, alongside David Ibbotson, to join up with his new team, days after completing his signing, when the Piper Malibu N264DB crashed into the sea along the English channel.

Meanwhile, Sala’s former side Nantes, plan to permanently retire their number nine jersey in honour of the departed Argentine striker.
