Jagielka Strikes Down Arsenal In Narrow Everton Win

By Max Wise

Phil Jagielka became the oldest player to score in the Premier League this season after his solitary first half strike gave Everton a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Arsenal, thus remain fourth, missing the chance to go above Tottenham Hotspurs, as their poor way form this season shows no signs of improvement.

Phil Jagielka,36, only in the Everton side after Michael Keane pulled out in the warm-up, gave the hosts the lead in the 10th minute.

Lucas Digne’s long throw caused panic in the Arsenal box, and after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header deflected into the path of Jagielka he coolly pounced to give Everton the lead for his first goal in two years.

Unai Emery shuffled his cards after the break, bringing on Aubameyang and Ramsey for Kolasinac and Elneny respectively, and it was the Juventus-bound midfielder who almost equalized for the Gunners.

Jordan Pickford punched a clearance into the path of Ramsey but the substitute scooped his effort over the bar before Lacazette headed a tame effort at Pickford a few minutes later.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ weak header to his goalkeeper in the 59th minute let Bernard in on goal but Bernd Leno was on hand to block the Brazilian’s effort.

In the 71st minute Henrikh Mkhitaryan drove across the edge of the Everton box and curled a right-footed effort narrowly wide before Sigurdsson responded for the hosts with a low strike straight at Leno just a minute later.

Everton should have been further ahead at this point but Richarlison skewed a good effort wide after Sigurdsson’s effort was blocked by Sokratis in the 74th minute.
